Cleveland Browns, NFL American Football Conference (AFC) franchise from Cleveland (NFL). Arthur B. McBride, a Cleveland industrialist, bought a franchise in the new All-America Football Conference in 1944, creating the Cleveland Browns. Paul Brown, a successful high school, college, and service coach, was McBride’s first hire after owning the team. In 1961, Arthur B. Modell gave the Browns $4 million. From the beginning, he was one of the most forward-thinking leaders in the NFL. Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore after the 1995 season. Cleveland kept the Browns name, but Modell renamed his team the Baltimore Ravens.
Modell believed the municipal administration and team fans needed to be more supportive, which was the main reason for the relocation. In 1999, the NFL gave Cleveland a team. In July 2012, the Browns’ owner, Randy Lerner, said he would sell the team to businessman Jimmy Haslam. The deal was done on August 2, 2012, and was worth more than $1 billion. At the NFL owners’ meetings on October 16, 2012, Haslam was officially approved as the new owner, and the next day, former Eagles president Joe Banner was named the Browns’ new CEO. The Browns had four coaches between 1999 and 2006: Chris Palmer (1999-2000), Butch Davis (2001-2004), Terry Robeski (2004), and Romeo Crennel (2006). Davis led the team to the playoffs in 2002.

The 2022 NFL season started with the Cleveland Browns taking on the Carolina Panthers and Baker Mayfield, who had previously played for the Panthers. Jacoby Brissett, a quarterback with no significant NFL experience, got the start for the Browns as Deshaun Watson served his 11-game ban. Cade York, a rookie kicker making his first career appearance, kicked a game-winning field goal from 58 yards to give the Browns a 26–24 victory.
The Browns selected York in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. At the end of the 2021 NFL season, the Browns had the lowest field goal % of any team in the NFL. Since 2016, this was the highest selection any kicker had received in the draft. The victory was the first for the Browns in the opening game of a season since 2004, and it was their first win in an opening game away from home in the NFL since 1994.
