The Indianapolis Colts are an American professional gridiron football team based in Indianapolis that competes in the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Colts had competed in the NFL since their founding in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1953, when then-owner Carroll Rosenbloom acquired the assets of the NFL’s last founding Ohio League member Dayton Triangles-Dallas Texans franchise.
They were one of three NFL teams that merged with American Football League (AFL) teams in 1970 to form the American Football Conference (AFC). While in Baltimore, the team reached the playoffs ten times and won three NFL Championship games in 1958, 1959, and 1968. Since moving to Indianapolis in 1984, the Colts have appeared in the playoffs sixteen times, won two conference titles, and participated in two Super Bowl contests.

In January 1997, Robert Irsay, the team’s owner and the man who transferred it to Indianapolis, died after years of worsening health. Jim Irsay, Robert Irsay’s son, became the company’s major owner after his father’s death. In 1997, Irsay replaced Tobin with Bill Polian as the team built around the 1998 draft’s first choice. Jim Irsay fired Lindy Infante and hired Bill Polian as general manager a year after taking over from his father. Polian then recruited Jim Mora to coach the squad and drafted Tennessee Volunteers.
The Colts acquired Matt Ryan, the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, and a third-round pick 2022 from the Falcons on March 21, 2022. Sam Ehlinger replaced Ryan for the rest of the season after appearing in seven games, during which he threw nine touchdown passes and nine interceptions and lost the ball eleven times. After a poor 3-5-1 start, the Colts let Reich go as head coach on November 7, 2022, the day after a 23-point loss to the New England Patriots. Later, the Colts promoted long-time centre Jeff Saturday to interim head coach.

- Don Shula, a great NFL head coach, led the Colts to Western Conference titles in 1964 and 1968. The Colts won the inaugural AFC Eastern division championship and Super Bowl V in the same year that Shula relocated to the Miami Dolphins.
- Robert Irsay relocated the Colts franchise from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984, bringing professional football to Indianapolis, Indiana.
- The Colts franchise was irrevocably altered when they selected quarterback Peyton Manning as the first overall choice in the 1998 NFL Draft. In the 2000s, the club would become one of the league’s most dominant squads.
- In 2006, with a Super Bowl XLI victory over the Chicago Bears, Peyton Manning led the Indianapolis Colts to their first championship in 36 years.
