5 Min Read

AFG VS CAN: The 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup saw AFG and CAN play their final group match of the event in the historic MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai) on October 28th 2023. Despite the fact that both teams had been eliminated from this year’s tournament (eliminated early and will not be advancing to Super 8), there was still something to play for pride. The 83-run victory by Afghanistan over Canada was the second-highest winning margin of the competition.

Match Summary: AFG VS CAN – ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

Match: Afghanistan vs Canada

Tournament: ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

Location: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, India.

Group: D

Final Result: Afghanistan won by 83 runs.

Ibrahim Zadran’s 95* and a total of 220/4 after 20 overs.

Afghanistan displayed a high level of batting during the game. Scoring a total of 220/4 in the full 20 overs on the scoreboard as the team’s total runs scored shows how great of an amount of runs Afghanistan had gathered at the end of the match.

Amid the outstanding batting by Ibrahim Zadran, who recorded 95 runs not out off 56 balls (7 fours, 5 sixes) was also able to contribute greatly to some great partnerships in the game such as both of the 47-run opening partnership between him and Rahmanullah Gurbaz and the 95-run third-wicket partnership with Sediqullah Atal.

The critical runs that were scored by Afghanistan late in the innings allowed Afghanistan to well go past the 200-run mark and finish with momentum.

Canada Vs Afghanistan: Initial Success Followed by a Rapid Fall From Grace.

When Canada set out in pursuit of 221, they started fast, but slowed down as they faced a very efficient Afghan bowling performance.

At the 5-over mark: Canada 32/2

The first wicket for Afghanistan was taken by Mujeeb Ur Rahman when he bowled Dilpreet Bajwa with a googly. The second wicket was achieved by Azmatullah Omarzai who also bowled Navneet Dhaliwal.

After 10 Overs: Canada 60/5

The middle order, under pressure, collapsed as Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan applied the brakes.

Rashid Khan’s Magic Spell Turns the Game

Rashid Khan has once again proved why he is one of the most feared T20 bowlers in the world. Bowled Shreyas Movva with a clever variation, swept away Saad Bin Zafar with a classic leg-break and kept the pressure on with his accurate lines and minute variations in pace. His spell tore apart the backbone of the Canadian batting order in this important AFG VS CAN match.

Mohammad Nabi Deepens Canada’s Troubles

Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi produced a match-winning performance with the ball. Yuvraj Samra was dismissed by Nabi with a leading edge. Nicholas Kirton was dismissed by Nabi while attempting a big shot. Later, he sent back Harsh Thaker to end a fighting partnership. Nabi’s clever use of flight and spin made it impossible for Canada to recover from the required run rate.

Although Harsh Thaker (30) and Saad Bin Zafar (28) put up a good fight for Canada, it was impossible to chase down Afghanistan’s score with an increasing required run rate.

Key Moments in the Game

Final Thoughts: Afghanistan wins in style

Afghanistan showcased their skill as a batting and spinning powerhouse in the AFG VS CAN match. Both teams had been eliminated from the Super 8 stage and therefore, this was a great positive for Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2026. Canada demonstrated some intent but they were unable to cope with Afghanistan’s experienced spin attack.
