The first-ever BWF AirBadminton World Cup is set to take place in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, marking a landmark chapter in the history of the sport. The event will take place from December 11 to 14, 2025.
A total of 12 national teams will take part in the debut BWF AirBadminton World Cup.
AirBadminton: The Outdoor Evolution
AirBadminton is the BWF’s dynamic new format designed for play on sand, grass, and hard courts. Using a specially engineered AirShuttle, the game allows players to enjoy badminton outdoors while maintaining the sport’s speed and precision.
BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul described AirBadminton as “an emerging growth discipline with immense potential to expand the global reach of badminton.”
“Our vision for flagship AirBadminton events such as the World Cup in Sharjah is to blend high-level competition with a vibrant festival atmosphere and evening entertainment, helping us reach new audiences and expand the global badminton community,” Leeswadtrakul said.
BWF AirBadminton World Cup 2025: List of teams
After a rigorous qualification process, 12 nations will vie for top honours in the inaugural World Cup:

- Germany
- Azerbaijan
- Hong Kong China
- Brazil
- Indonesia
- Bulgaria
- Nigeria
- China
- United Arab Emirates (Host Nation)
- Egypt
- Netherlands
A maximum of 96 athletes will compete across three events: men’s triples, women’s triples, and the team relay.
Among the big names to feature are former men’s singles world top-10 player Wong Wing Ki Vincent will lead Team Relay favourites Hong Kong China, adding star power and experience to the lineup.

BWF AirBadminton World Cup: How the Competition Works
Triples Format
- Matches are played in a best-of-five games system.
- Each game is won by the first team to reach 9 points.
- If the score reaches 8–all, a two-point lead is required to win.
- At 12–all, the next point decides the game.
- Teams can make up to three substitutions per match.
Team Relay Format
Each tie features four matches:
- Women’s Doubles
- Men’s Doubles
- Women’s Triples
- Men’s Triples
- Each match is played to 15 points, with scores carried forward in a relay format.
- The first team to reach a combined total of 60 points wins the tie.
- Players may participate in one or two matches per tie.
