Ajinkya Rahane is a well-known name in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since the first season of the IPL in 2008, Rahane has been a part of the tournament. Over the years, he has played for six different teams, showing his talent and leadership. In IPL 2025, Rahane will once again be part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was with KKR in the IPL 2022 season before playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a couple of seasons.

At the IPL 2025 auction, KKR picked Ajinkya Rahane for his base price of INR 1.5 crores. With KKR’s previous captain, Shreyas Iyer, leaving after their 2024 IPL title win, KKR needed a new leader. According to reports from the Times Of India, Ajinkya Rahane is likely to be the next captain of KKR for IPL 2025. KKR seems to trust his experience as a player and former captain.

IPL Teams Rahane Played For

Ajinkya Rahane has played for six franchises in his IPL career. Most of his time was spent with Rajasthan Royals (RR). His first run with RR lasted from 2012 to 2015. After RR was banned for two seasons, Rahane played for Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). When RR returned, Rahane rejoined them for two more seasons in 2018 and 2019. He even led Rising Pune Supergiant during RR’s suspension.

Rahane’s Captaincy Record

Ajinkya Rahane has led two teams in the IPL: Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiant. In total, he captained in 25 matches between 2017 and 2019. Out of these 25 games, his teams won only 9 matches and lost 16.

Rajasthan Royals 25 9 16

Under his leadership, Rajasthan Royals (RR) made it to the playoffs in IPL 2018 but did not reach the final. However, in the next season, RR had a rough start. After several losses, Rahane was replaced as captain by Steve Smith.

Rahane’s Batting Performance as a Captain

Rahane’s performance as a captain with the bat was below expectations. In 25 matches, he scored 583 runs at an average of 25. His strike rate was 122, which is considered low for T20 cricket. As captain, he managed to score only two half-centuries. Additionally, Rahane hit just nine sixes across those 25 games.

Despite his struggles as a captain and batsman, Rahane’s vast experience makes him a key player for KKR in IPL 2025. KKR would be hoping that his leadership will help them in their quest for another title.
