In the recently held Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election on Monday, Aminul Islam has been re-elected as president for a second term running.

The election, which was conducted in a hotel in Dhaka, comprised physical votes and e-ballots and involved 115 of the 156 eligible voters. Aminul, who had earlier served as president for just four months after Faruque Ahmed’s removal in May, will now serve for the next four years.

Election Procedure and Voting Information

The election process had two stages. The 156 participating council members were divided into three groups to choose 23 members of the board of directors. In Category 1, which comprised districts and divisions within Bangladesh, Aminul Islam was chosen as one among the ten directors.

Twelve directors were selected under Category 2, which consisted of Dhaka clubs. Category 3 comprised representatives of captains, other organisations, and former cricket players.

The election also saw the appointment of two government representatives, making the board a 25-member body. Despite minor allegations of “intimidation” from election commission representatives, the voting process proceeded without major incidents.

Key Leadership Appointments at BCB

Besides Aminul Islam getting re-elected as the president, Faruque Ahmed, the previous president of the board, and Shakhawat Hossain have been elected as the vice-presidents. Interestingly, Aminul’s re-election was unanimous and no one else contested the president and vice-president posts.

The new board of the BCB also consists of a few past cricketers, such as Aminul Islam, Faruque Ahmed, and Khaled Mashud. Past Bangladesh cricketer Abdur Razzak was elected unopposed as a board director from Khulna sub-category, after he left the position of senior men’s selector.

Controversies Surrounding the Election

The election itself was contentious. Tamim Iqbal, the erstwhile Bangladesh captain of the national cricket team, pulled out of the race after charges of interference. The rumpus followed Aminul Islam sending a letter requesting fresh nominations in the first category, which was legally cleared at the last minute before the election.

Despite of all these controversies, Aminul Islam’s tenure as president is not dented, and he is determined to promote the growth of Bangladesh cricket during his second term as president. After being elected again, Aminul spoke about his love for the role, referring to his “love” for Bangladesh cricket’s development.

Aminul Islam’s Vision for Bangladesh Cricket

When Aminul Islam’s formal confirmation as the president for a second term was final, Aminul said he wanted to continue in this role after “falling in love with Bangladesh cricket’s development”. When he was elected on May 30, Aminul had said that his short-term role would be like a “quick T20 innings”.

Aminul Islam has a wealth of experience in the world of cricket since he participated in 39 ODIs and 13 Tests respectively. Another landmark occasion in his career was leading Bangladesh during their historic campaign in the 1999 World Cup. As president of the BCB, Aminul has always been interested in talent development, infrastructure building, and laying down a sustainable structure for the game in Bangladesh.
