Shaheen Afridi is renowned for winning matches with the ball, but on Monday, he pulled on his batting cap to force a Super Over in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) by hammering 23 runs in the final over of the match. Afridi, the captain of the Lahore Qalandars in the league, was ranked eighth in his team’s match against Peshawar Zalmi. His squad appeared to be in trouble while pursuing a 159-point goal, having been down to 94/6 at one stage. Wahab Riaz, the captain of Zalmi, then grabbed two wickets in the 19th over, including all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, who struck 49 in 44 balls, leaving the Qalandars needing 24 to win in the last over.

After Mohammad Umar sent the opening ball wide, Afridi smacked the first ball for four and the following two for sixes in a row. Umar then got two dot balls in, but Afridi sent the last one hurtling for a six, forcing a Super Over. He scored 39 runs off 20 balls, hitting two fours and four sixes.

Shahid Afridi, whose daughter Aqsa is engaged to Shaheen, retweeted the Pakistan fast bowler’s achievement. “SHAHEEN AFRIDIIII YOU BEAUTYYY!!!” he tweeted, including a collage of himself celebrating with a squad when playing for Pakistan and Shaheen relishing the event.
