Arsenal Agree Personal Terms with Valencia Starlet Cristhian Mosquera, Gunners Close In On Defensive Reinforcement

Another day, another Spaniard packing his bags for north London. Arsenal have agreed personal terms with Valencia’s highly-rated defender Cristhian Mosquera, and a move to the Emirates is edging closer than Mikel Arteta is to the fourth official on a matchday.

Who is Cristhian Mosquera?

Well, he’s not your average defender. Born in Alicante with Colombian roots, Mosquera actually started out as a basketball kid before taking a detour into futsal. From there, the football bug bit, and by 2013, he was sprinting down the wing for local side Hercules as a pacey attacker.

Fast forward to 2022, and he was making his senior debut for Valencia in the Copa del Rey, not as a winger, but as a towering defender. Talk about a glow-up.

Why Arsenal Want Him

Let’s keep it simple: Arsenal want depth. With Takehiro Tomiyasu exiting via mutual contract termination (cheerio, Takehiro), the Gunners needed someone versatile enough to cover both centre-back and right-back. Mosquera fits the bill, young, experienced, and built like a brick wall with a GPS for the ball.

He made 90 appearances for Valencia including 37 out of 38 full 90-minute shifts last season in La Liga. That’s reliability you can set your calendar to.

Arteta’s Youth Revolution Rolls On

Mosquera isn’t Arsenal’s only summer signing. The Gunners are on a bit of a Spanish spree, having already brought in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, midfield engine Christian Norgaard from Brentford, and surprise signing Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea (yes, that Kepa).

Oh, and they’re this close to wrapping up a €73.5m (£63.5m) deal for Sporting’s goal machine Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal’s transfer window? Cooking on all burners.

Final Whistle

Mosquera’s story is straight out of a football fairytale: basketball courts, futsal pitches, right-wing runs and now, potentially, Champions League nights at the Emirates. If all goes according to plan, Arsenal’s backline could soon feature a 21-year-old Spanish baller with a defender’s brain and a winger’s feet.
