Arsenal Splash £60m on Martin Zubimendi: Arteta’s Midfield Rebuild Rolls On

Arsenal are cooking this summer and the latest addition to the pot is Spanish midfield maestro Martin Zubimendi. Signed from Real Sociedad for a hefty £60 million, the 26-year-old becomes the Gunners’ second major signing of the window, after snapping up goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a cool £5m from Chelsea.

Now, this isn’t just another “sign a midfielder for depth” situation. This is Arteta going full chess grandmaster mode and Zubimendi might just be the pivot Arsenal have been craving since the good old Cazorla days.

The Zubimendi Lowdown

A product of the Real Sociedad conveyor belt (yes, the one that also gave us Oyarzabal and a whole bunch of technically gifted Basques), Zubimendi played 236 times for La Real, scored 10 goals, and oozed calm in the deep midfield role. Think Xabi Alonso, but with the running legs of a man ten years younger.

He’s signed a five-year deal at the Emirates and couldn’t be more thrilled.

“This is a huge moment in my career,” he said.
“It’s the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.”

Zubimendi also made it clear that Arsenal’s playing style was the big green flag for him. “They have shown their potential recently,” he said. “And the best is yet to come.” A man who’s clearly been watching Arteta’s project evolve with interest.

European Champion Vibes

Let’s not forget, Zubimendi is fresh off winning Euro 2024 with Spain. He came on at half-time for Rodri in the final against England, which ended with Oyarzabal’s winner. Oh, and before that? He also scored in the Nations League final vs. Portugal. Spain may have lost on penalties, but Zubimendi showed he’s not shy of the big stage.

Add to that his 19 Spain caps and a steadily rising international stock especially with Rodri battling injuries last season and you’ve got a midfielder who’s been mixing it up at the highest level.

What Arteta Said

Let’s just say Arteta was beaming (probably already plotting triangles on the tactics board).

“Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team,” said the boss.
“He will fit in really well and has all the attributes to be a key player for us.”

And There’s More: Norgaard Incoming

While everyone’s busy drooling over Zubimendi, Arsenal have also quietly agreed a £10m deal with Brentford for Christian Norgaard. Smart business. Danish, experienced, Premier League-ready. Exactly the kind of backup that lets you rotate without anxiety.

So far, it’s:

  • Zubimendi for £60m

  • Kepa for £5m

  • Norgaard for £10m
