Arshdeep Singh Set For Test Debut At The Oval: Arshdeep Singh is all set to make his Test debut in the fifth and final match of the India vs England series, starting Thursday at The Oval in London. The left-arm pacer, who missed the fourth Test in Manchester due to a hand injury that needed stitches, is now fully fit. He bowled at full pace during India’s first practice session at The Oval on Tuesday and looked sharp and in rhythm.
As reported by The Times of India, Arshdeep Singh had been in the team’s plans since the third ENG vs IND Test, but his injury forced the management to explore other bowling options.
Although he’s best known for his performances in white-ball cricket, Arshdeep Singh has put up solid numbers in first-class matches for Punjab. In 21 red-ball games, he has picked up 66 wickets at an average of 30. His experience playing County cricket for Kent could also be a big plus in English conditions.
What sets Arshdeep Singh apart is that he’s the only left-arm fast bowler in the Indian squad. His ability to swing the new ball and bowl heavy deliveries, something he does effectively in T20Is, could make him a real threat to England’s aggressive batting lineup.
Who Could Make Way for Arshdeep Singh?
After a rough debut in Manchester, Anshul Kamboj is unlikely to retain his spot in the playing XI. Shardul Thakur’s role is also being questioned, especially since he bowled just 11 overs despite England racking up 669 runs in the previous game. With the series on the line, India may not want to go into the match with two bowlers who haven’t been at their best.
That opens the door for both Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep to come into the team, unless the selectors choose to go with spinner Kuldeep Yadav instead.
Akash Deep, who had been dealing with a groin injury, is also expected to be ready. After the drawn fourth Test, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all bowlers in the squad are now fit and available for selection.
Will Jasprit Bumrah Be Rested?
There’s also a bit of uncertainty around Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the final ENG vs IND Test.
“No discussion on Jasprit Bumrah playing. Bumrah is fit now. According to his load, he has bowled one inning in the last match. So, obviously, the head coach, our physio and captain will have a discussion and decide,” said India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
Bumrah has been India’s standout bowler in this series, taking 14 wickets with two five-wicket hauls. He’s averaging 26.00 with the ball and has maintained an economy rate of 3.04. However, it’s worth noting that the Indian team had earlier mentioned that Bumrah would only play in three of the five Tests in this series, so there’s a chance he could be rested for the finale.
