Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one in women’s singles tennis, has pulled off the WTA 1000 tournament that will take place in Montreal from July 26 to August 7, 2025.
The Belarusian took a time off before returning to the hard-court action for the North American leg.
“I’m looking forward to kicking off the North American hard-court swing, but to give myself the best chance for success this season, I’ve decided it’s in my best interest to skip Montreal,” a statement read.
The decision of the 27-year-old to skip the Canadian Open came after she lost in an intense battle to American Amanda Anisimova in the semi-final match at Wimbledon 2025.
“I’ll miss my amazing Canadian fans, but I’m already looking forward to seeing you all next year. Thanks for your understanding and support. It means the world to me!”
Sabalenka will return to professional action with the Cincinnati Open in early August where she will be bidding to defend the title. She will then feature in the first round of the U.S. Open set to begin on August 24.
The three-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open for the first time in 2024.
The Belarusian reached the quarterfinals of Canadian Open in Toronto in 2024 and will therefore lose 215 WTA points. She was defeated by none other than Anisimova — the same player who beat her just in the Wimbledon semi-finals a few days ago.
