Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal was one of many issues surrounding the second Ashes Test. The England custodian dodged a bouncer and rushed out of his crease to meet Ben Stokes in the middle. When Alex Carey spotted his chance, he threw the ball straight at the stumps. After a brief examination, Bairstow was awarded.
After the incident, some males in the Long Room started abusing the Australian players as the squad made its way back to the locker room.
Nathan Lyon
Nathan Lyon talked about the incident and said, “There were a few Australian guys and a few English guys in the lunchroom and I hobbled up on my crutches and stood in the middle of it and tried to calm things down a little bit.”
Lyon talked about Jonny Bairstow’s reaction to the controversial dismissal. The veteran off-spinner said, “Jonny had a few words here or there. That’s all part of it, I’m all for it.”
The club had to contact security due to the vitriol being directed at the Australian players, and three MCC members were suspended as a result. Lyon added that he had an elderly English woman apologise to him for the members’ actions. Lyon said, “I actually had an older lady come up to me in tears, an English lady in tears from the main members’ area, and she said ‘I’ve got to go home. I just want to apologise to you Australian cricketers for the way everyone has reacted inside the Lord’s.”
Lyon shared how he felt during the controversy regarding the dismissal was happening. He said, “I was in the change room and I just erupted. I was like ‘how good. Suck eggs. That’s out every day’.”
Jonny Bairstow
Jonny Bairstow has been at the centre stage of all the attention. The English wicket-keeper’s position behind the stumps has come under question. Former England captain, Geoffrey Boycott wanted England to drop Bairstow from playing XI. The hosts have announced their playing XI for the fourth test. Bairstow is still the keeper for the hosts.
