The Asian Weightlifting Federation has officially announced the venue for the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026. The championship will be held in Ahmedabad, India, from 1 April to 10 April 2026. This marks a significant moment for Indian weightlifting since the country hosted the last event decades ago in 1982 in New Delhi.
A Change In Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 Venue
Originally, the Asian Weightlifting Championship 2026 was scheduled to take place in Gandhinagar, which is yet another prominent city in India, in the state of Gujarat. The decision to shift the venue to Ahmedabad was taken after a series of discussions by AWF.
The Indian Weightlifting Federation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Gujarat to ensure the successful hosting of the event. This partnership highlights India’s commitment to promoting sports in the field of weightlifting. The championship will bring together the world’s best athletes, offering them a stage to get international recognition.
India, specifically, has given us many top-class athletes in this field, like the Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, who was last seen at the Paris Olympics.
Introduction Of The New Weight Categories
The Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 will be the first edition of the tournament to be held under the IWF’s new weight categories
The tournament will feature new bodyweight categories introduced by the International Weightlifting Federation, effective from 1 June. For senior men, the categories will be 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 98kg, 110kg, and +110kg, while for senior women, they will be 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, and +86kg.
These changes will be seen at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 and the Commonwealth Games.
The most recent edition of the tournament was held in Jiangshan, China, and saw massive participation from the Indian team, featuring top lifters like Mirabai Chanu, who opted to adjust to the new categories.
