It looks like the member of Japan’s gold medal-winning team will have her medal replaced with a fresh one after the mayor of hometown chomped down the original. The organizers of Tokyo 2020 said on Thursday, following an outcry on social media.
There was an event held last week to celebrate Mini Goto’s achievement at the Toko 2020 Games, Takashi Kawamura mayor of central’s Japan’s city of Nagoya, pulled down his mask and put her gold medal between his teeth.
“ With support from International Olympic Committee and in line with her own intention, Ms. Goto’s medal is now set to be exchanged for a new one”, Tokyo 2020 organizers said, they also added by saying IOC will bear the cost of the exchange.
After the incident occurred the mayor received a lot of criticism from social media for disregarding the coronavirus etiquette and was accused of showing a lack of respect for her feat. The thing that felt really odd is that there was no disapproval for his action from Toyota Motor Corp, which owns Red Terriers that Goto is a part of.
Goto or Kawamura was not immediately available for comment.
