AUS vs ENG: Australia tightened their grip on this Ashes 2025/26 series with a commanding second-Test victory, inspired by seamer Michael Neser’s superb five-wicket haul. A rare display of resistance from England, especially a 96-run stand between Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, came far too late to alter the course of the match.

AUS vs ENG: England’s Late Resistance

Stokes and Jacks dig in for 37 overs. Resuming at 134 for 6 and still trailing by 43, England abandoned their usual aggressiveness. It was a patient partnership as Ben Stokes and Will Jacks lasted nearly 37 overs.

Their stand, scoring at just 2.45 runs per over, was the slowest 50-plus partnership of the entire Bazball era. Under a fierce Brisbane sun and on a benign pitch, Stokes’ watchful approach paid off early, as did Jacks’ discipline beyond his limited Test experience. Their effort even drew a standing ovation from the Barmy Army.

Neser Breaks Through to Trigger Another England Collapse

Neser, selected controversially ahead of Nathan Lyon, was relentless. He removed both Jacks and Stokes to break the partnership. A brilliant, low one-handed catch from Steven Smith dismissed Jacks.

Alex Carey, excellent behind the stumps, completed Stokes’s dismissal with a sharp take. From there, England unravelled again to lose 4 for 17. Neser took his first Test five-for, capping a career-defining performance.

Australia Cruise to Victory Despite Minor Hiccups

Head Starts Fast, Smith Finishes in Style. Chasing just 65, Australia began aggressively. Travis Head smashed Australia to 33 for 0 in five overs before falling after the break. It was soon followed by Marnus Labuschagne, giving England a small window of hope.

A heated verbal exchange between Smith and Jofra Archer added to the late drama, but Smith responded emphatically pulling Archer for six before launching another maximum to seal the win. He finished with a blistering 23 off 9 balls.

England’s Costly Mistakes Haunt Them Again

England’s sloppiness throughout the game, especially their five dropped catches, proved decisive. The late resistance belatedly showed what might have been possible if similar discipline had been shown earlier.

Australia dominated, even in the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, through team work, clarity of tactics and experience of day-night conditions. Stand-in captain Steven Smith impressed tactically and in the field, to draw level with Rahul Dravid in second place in the all-time list of outfield catches.

England’s Questions Run Deep Following Heavy Defeat vs Australia (AUS v ENG)

After suffering another heavy defeat in the AUS vs ENG Ashes 2025/26 series in Brisbane, England have left with many unanswered questions.

Although Ben Stokes played a valiant innings of 50 from 152 balls and Matthew Jacks showed great patience during his innings of 39 from 75 balls, neither performance concealed the deeper problems for England. Australia now seem to firmly hold the upper hand in what has already become a very one-sided Ashes series.
