Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson has officially stepped away from professional cricket, bringing an end to a long and memorable career that stretched across 17 years. From international triumphs to domestic success and globe-trotting T20 leagues, Richardson leaves the game with plenty to be proud of.
A World Cup Winner and a Big Bash Mainstay
Kane Richardson was part of Australia’s title-winning squad at the 2021 T20 World Cup, one of the standout moments of his international career. Over the years, he built a strong reputation in the shortest format and became one of the most reliable bowlers in Big Bash League history.
Across 15 BBL seasons, he picked up 142 wickets, placing him fifth on the men’s all-time wicket-takers list. He turned out for three franchises along the way: Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Sixers, making his presence felt wherever he played. On the international stage, Kane Richardson earned 25 one-day international caps and featured in 36 T20 internationals for Australia. He also played a key role in the Renegades’ title-winning campaign in BBL|08.
A Renegades Favourite in Melbourne
Kane Richardson’s impact with the Melbourne Renegades stands out as a defining chapter of his career. He finished as the club’s leading men’s wicket-taker in BBL history, claiming 104 wickets in 80 matches. His consistency and experience made him a crucial part of the Renegades’ bowling attack during some of their most successful seasons.
From State Beginnings to Big Bash Success
The Victorian quick began his T20 journey back in 2009 with South Australia during the original, state-based Big Bash competition. When the revamped BBL launched, Richardson featured in Adelaide Strikers’ very first match in BBL 1. He went on to play 36 games for the Strikers across six seasons before making the move to the Renegades in BBL 7, where he enjoyed the most productive spell of his domestic T20 career.
Battling Injuries and a Final Season
In recent years, injuries became harder to manage and limited Richardson’s time on the field. The 34-year-old wrapped up his playing career with the Sydney Sixers in BBL 15, featuring in two matches during his final season.

A Well-Rounded Career Across Formats and Continents
While T20 cricket brought Richardson much of his recognition, he also enjoyed a solid career in the longer formats. He played 34 first-class matches, taking 102 wickets, and featured in 98 List A games, where he claimed 153 dismissals.
His T20 journey spanned 201 matches and took him well beyond Australia. Richardson played in the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Rajasthan Royals, and the Pune Warriors.
