India’s top amateur golfer, Avani Prashanth, made an impressive start in the 2024 Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific, carding a 4-under 68 in the first round and securing a tied fourth-place position. Avani is just one shot behind the Thai duo of defending champion Eila Galitsky and her teammate Novaporn Soontreeyapas, along with Taiwan’s Chen-Wei Wu, who shot 5-under 67 each.
Leading the six-member Indian team, Avani Prashanth showcased her skills at the challenging Siam Country Club in Pattaya, Thailand. Despite starting with a bogey on the Par-5 10th hole, she made a strong recovery, registering six birdies and two bogeys in her round. Avani’s birdies came between the 13th and the 16th holes, displaying resilience and strategic play.
While Avani holds the spotlight in tied fourth place, two other Indian players, Vidhatri Urs, and Saanvi Somu, had commendable performances, both shooting 1-over 73 to secure a Tied 39th position. However, scores from the remaining team members—Keerthana Rajeev Nair, Heena Kang, and Mannat Brar—were not as favorable.
Avani expressed satisfaction with her round, stating, “I’m so glad it turned out how it did. I put myself in good positions from there on and I set myself up for a birdie on nearly every hole from there. The ones that dropped, dropped, and the ones that didn’t, I’ll probably get them tomorrow.”
As the tournament progresses, Avani Prashanth looks poised for a competitive and promising performance in the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific.
