T20 World Cup 2024 Final: New Zealand made history on Sunday by winning their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup title, defeating South Africa in the final by 32 runs. With this victory, New Zealand became the fourth team to win the Women’s T20 World Cup, joining Australia (six-time winners), England, and the West Indies. 

It was the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup since the tournament was inaugurated in 2009.

T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa vs New Zealand

South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first. New Zealand posted a total of 158 runs in their 20 overs for the loss of five wickets. Suzie Bates scored 32 runs off 31 balls, Amelia Kerr made 43 runs off 38 balls, Brooke Halliday notched up 38 runs off 28 balls. For South Africa, Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk took one wicket each while Nonkululeko Mlaba scalped two wickets.  

In reply, the Proteas were restricted to 128 runs in their 20 overs. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt was the top scorer of the innings with 33 runs off 27 balls. For the Kiwis, Rosemary Mair and Amelia Kerr picked three wickets each, while Eden Carson, Fran Jonas and Brooke Halliday contributed with one wicket each.

New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr was the highlight of the tournament with a haul of 15 wickets from six matches, the most wickets in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. With this, she made the record for the most wickets taken by a bowler in any single edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The next edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in England in 2026, which will feature 12 competing teams for the first time.
