Lewis Hamilton topped Azerbaijan Grand Prix FP2, leading a determined Ferrari one-two and proving, yet again, that age is just a number when you’re a seven-time world champion. But don’t blink, because Baku isn’t famous for clean Friday afternoons, and FP2 delivered the full chaos platter, fresh and hot.
Ferrari Flex at Azerbaijan Grand Prix FP2: Lewis Hamilton on Fire
Hamilton wasn’t just quick, he was quick enough to smash out a lap of 1:41.293, a time even faster than last year’s pole, flexing the full prancing horse power and leaving Charles Leclerc just 0.074s adrift in P2. Leclerc flirted heavily with the unforgiving Baku walls but kept his Ferrari whole, keeping the Maranello dream alive for Saturday.
McLaren Mayhem: Norris and Piastri Bite Back
McLaren just couldn’t catch a break today. Lando Norris hit the wall at Turn 4, absolutely wrecking his left-rear suspension, which forced him to limp back to the pits and sit out the final 30 minutes. Oscar Piastri, points leader and resident wall magnet, joined the party with a double-barrier bash at Turn 15 but got away with mostly scuffs and nerves. Norris finished 10th, Piastri 12th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix FP2, and everyone in papaya orange will be sweating over the repair bill tonight.
Mercedes and Haas, Plus Your Wildcards
George Russell kept it respectful in P3, echoing a Mercedes resurgence we haven’t seen since, well, last week. Kimi Antonelli was right on his gearbox in P4, and Haas rookie Ollie Bearman quietly slid into fifth, showing Baku rewards the brave and the bold, not just the big names. Max Verstappen, for once, looked human, down in sixth after missing the real action with a cooler car than usual.
Drama Everywhere: Walls, Spins, and Escapes
Beyond the headline crashes, Azerbaijan Grand Prix FP2 played its greatest hits: Liam Lawson ran deep at Turn 15; Stroll smacked the wall (standard for him); and Franco Colapinto, Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly, and Carlos Sainz staged a collective demo of “How Not to Nail a Street Circuit”. Yellow flags waved like there was a sale on them at the stewards’ office.
