From 1985 to 1986, he won both the WBA and lineal featherweight championships. Between 1983 and 1985, he was the regional champion and the British and European featherweight champion. As BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1985, McGuigan. The International Boxing Hall of Fame accepted him in 2005.
