The basketball court is the gameplay ground in basketball, comprising of a rectangular floor with baskets at each side. Indoor basketball courts are often made of smooth wood, usually maple, with rims that are 3.048 metres (10 feet) high on each basket. Outdoor surfaces are typically constructed of common paving materials like concrete or asphalt. Glass basketball courts may be used in international tournaments.
In this article we will look at the requirements such as size and markings that are kept in mind while designing the basketball court,
The standard length of a Basketball Court
A basketball court is 28 metres long. These measurements can be whittled down to 26m for Premier, Club and Community courts in which only lesser spaces are accessible.
The standard width of a Basketball Court
In the United Kingdom, an international-standard basketball court is typically 15 metres wide. If lower levels of play are required, the court lines can be whittled down by no more than 1m (14m).
The standard total area of a Basketball Court
A professional basketball court has a total surface area of 420m2. The minimum area permitted by Basketball England is 364m2. These dimensions are applicable to both indoor and outdoor courts. With the addition of 2.05m run-offs and 2m for teams and officials on the sidelines, the total area tends to increase to 677.31m2.
Basketball court dimensions (in feet)
A basketball court measures 91.86 feet long and 49.21 feet wide. A court’s total playing surface is 4520.43 ft2 and 7290.5 ft2 if run-offs and sidelines are used.
Basketball court dimensions (in yards)
A basketball court measures 30.62 yards in length and 16.4 yards in width. A court’s total playing surface is 502.31yds2 and 810yds2 if run-offs and sidelines are necessary.
Basketball Court Markings
The regulation line markings should be 50mm width in a contrasting colour to the basketball court.
Sidelines of a Basketball Court
The outer edge of the basketball court is generally denoted by the sidelines, which ideally run the length of the court. On a full-sized court they usually measure 28m.
Baseline and End line of a Basketball Court
Both the words baseline and end line refer to the sides of the court that run behind the goals. They are typically 15m long. The terminology used depends on the direction in which a team is playing. Endline refers to the end of the court where a team is defending, whereas baseline refers to the attacking end.
Mid Court
The halfway point on the court is used to signify the offensive playing area throughout a game. The mid court line on a full-sized court must be 14m from each end line.
Centre Circle
The centre circle has a 3.6m diameter and serves as the opening tip off.
Three Point Line
The 3 point lines are the arcs that separate each hoop’s range. Outside of this line, scoring is rewarded with three points. The distance between the line and the basket varies depending on the level of play, but it is usually 6.75m.
Free throw line
When shooting free throws, a player must hold at the free throw line, which is marked 4.6m from the backboard.
Free throw circle
The size of the free throw circle is identical to the size of the centre circle (3.6m in diameter). When shooting a free throw, shooters must stay within this circle. Jump balls are also played in the circle.
Free throw lane lines/key
To form the ‘key,’ lane lines run from the free throw line to the baseline. The shape and width of the court can vary based on the level of play, but FIBA (International Basketball Federation) regulation changes in 2010 established it as a 4.9m by 5.8m rectangle.
