Anabolic-androgenic steroids (aas) or simply anabolic steroids are the more precise classifications for drugs usually referred to as steroids in sports. Natural steroids such as testosterone are among these, as are synthetic variants that are similar in structure to testosterone and function properly just as well. Both are prescription-only medications used to treat a wide range of conditions affiliated with testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism) in both men and women.
Athletes and bodybuilders may use anabolic steroids for non-medical purposes such as muscle building, stamina, and resilience. This type of use is illegal and is prohibited by the majority of sports organisations. Despite overwhelming evidence that they can end up causing serious health problems, some athletes continue to use them illegally.
In this article, we will highlight the legalized and prohibited supplements in basketball sport,
Legalized Supplements in Basketball
- Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)
A branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) is an amino acid with an aliphatic side chain that includes a branch (a central carbon atom bound to three or more carbon atoms). There are 3 BCAAs among many of the proteinogenic amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. 2-aminoisobutyric acid is an example of a non-proteinogenic BCAA.
- Whey Protein
Whey protein is the protein derived from whey, the watery portion of milk that excludes from the curds during the cheesemaking process. It’s popular as a protein supplement. Whey protein may enhance the nutrient content of the diet while also influencing the immune system. Whey protein is commonly used to improve athletic performance and strength. Whey protein is also utilized to treat asthma, diabetes, weight loss, and a variety of other conditions, but there is little scientific evidence to back up the majority of these claims.
- Creatine
Creatine supplementation for athletic productivity augmentation is deemed safe for brief use, but there is a shortage of long-term safety data, as well as data regarding its use in children and adolescents. Creatine supplements are available in the following forms: ethyl ester, gluconate, monohydrate, and nitrate.
- Glutamine
The amino acid glutamine is the most prevalent in the body. It is produced in the muscles and transported by the blood to various organ systems. Glutamine is a protein-building block in the body. It is also required for the synthesis of other amino acids and glucose. Glutamine supplements may benefit gut function, immune function, and other mechanisms, particularly during stressful times when the body utilizes more glutamine.
Prohibited Supplements in Basketball
- Diuretics
Diuretics (also known as water pills or fluid pills) are medications that increase the amount of urine produced by the body. Urination is the body’s method of getting rid of excess salt and water. This not only relieves symptoms like ankle swelling, but it also aids in lowering blood pressure. Diuretics are classified into several types, which include carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, loop diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics, and thiazide diuretics. Each type functions differently and in various parts of the kidney cell (called a nephron).
- Stimulants
CNS stimulants (CNS stands for central nervous system) are medications that stimulate the brain, causing both mental and physical processes to ramp up. They boost energy, enhance focus and attentiveness, and raise blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate. They minimise the need for sleep, reduce appetite, boost confidence and ability to focus, and mitigate inhibitions.
- Human Growth Hormone
Somatropin is a type of human growth hormone that is essential for bone and muscle growth. Somatropin is a medication used to treat growth retardation in children and adults who do not produce enough natural growth hormone. People with Noonan syndrome, Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, short stature at birth with no catch-up growth, and other causes are included. Adults can also use somatropin to treat short bowel syndrome or to prevent serious weight loss caused by AIDS.
- Anabolic Steroids
Androgens and anabolic steroids include the male sex hormones testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, as well as other sex hormone mimics. They encourage the growth of male sexual characteristics (such as voice deepening and beard growth) as well as the advancement of male sex organs. Anabolic steroids promote growth in a variety of tissues, particularly bone and muscle. Anabolic effects include increased red blood cell production.
