T20, they say, is a batter’s game with them having the license to go after the bowlers in an attempt to score as quickly as possible. The saying seems to be true if we go by how the approach of the batters has changed in the last four years, with them going for their shots right from the first ball.
The shift is evident by the number of centuries that have been scored in multination tournaments like the T20 World Cup since 2022. Out of the 14 centuries scored in the T20 World Cup, six have been scored since the 20022 edition of the tournament, which took place in Australia.
Compared to that, a maximum of two centuries was scored in a single edition of the T20 World Cup till 2016, which has increased to three.
The Conditions
Having said that, there is a major factor that needs to be considered if we talk about the recent edition of the T20 World Cup, which is the batting condition that has been on offer in the last three World Cups, including the ongoing one in India and Sri Lanka.
For instance, not a single century was scored in the 2024 T20 World Cup held in USA and the West Indies because a majority of the games were played on wickets that were sluggish in nature, meaning that the batters had to work hard to score runs.

The Wicket
As compared to that, there was a mix of pitches, some of which were conducive for bowling, while others were good for batting in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, which is the reason why we saw as many as three centuries in a single edition of the World Cup for the first time since its start in 2007.
If we talk about the 2026 T20 World Cup being hosted by India and Sri Lanka, it has already witnessed three centuries in the form of Yuvraj Samra, Pathum Nissanka and Sahibzada Farhan.
The Time
Interestingly, all three centuries this year so far have been openers, which shows that the batters who open the batting have a higher chance of getting to three figures as compared to the middle order batters, as they seldom get enough balls to get their eye in in order to get to the milestone.
