BBL 2024-25: A Remarkable Season Ends
The 14th edition of the BBL was a spectacle, filled with intense battles between bat and ball. Emerging stars like Mitchell Owen and Jason Sangha grabbed the spotlight, while seasoned players such as Steve Smith and David Warner added to the excitement.
Throughout the season, Hobart Hurricanes dominated the league table, securing 15 points from 10 matches. Sydney Sixers followed closely with 14 points, while Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Notably, Melbourne Stars made an impressive comeback, winning their last five matches to clinch the fourth spot.
BBL 2024-25 Final Match Recap
Hobart Hurricanes entered the final in top form, having defeated Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier match to book their place. Sydney Thunder, on the other hand, fought their way through the Knockout and Challenger stages to secure a spot in the grand finale.
Sydney Thunder began the final on a strong note, with David Warner and Jason Sangha laying a solid foundation, scoring 97 runs without losing a wicket in the first 10 overs. However, Hurricanes’ captain Nathan Ellis turned the tide by picking up two quick wickets, reducing Thunder to 97/2.
Ellis led the bowling attack with precision, finishing with figures of 3/23, while Chris Green’s late cameo helped Sydney Thunder post a competitive total of 183.
Mitchell Owen’s Blazing Century
During the chase, it was Mitchell Owen who stole the show. Owen, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, opened the innings with Caleb Jewell and blasted his way to a sensational 108 runs off just 42 balls. His knock included the joint-fastest century in BBL history, reaching the milestone in just 39 balls.
With this aggressive start, the Hurricanes chased down the target with ease, completing the win in just 14.1 overs. Owen’s performance earned him the Man of the Match award in the final.
