BBL 2026: Brisbane Heat pulled off one of the most unbelievable run chases ever seen in the Big Bash League, leaving fans stunned on Friday, December 19. Chasing a towering target of 258, the Heat crushed the Perth Scorchers by eight wickets in the sixth match of BBL 2025–26 at the Gabba in Brisbane.

What followed was a batting display that will be talked about for years. Jack Wildermuth and Matt Renshaw produced something truly special, turning what looked like an impossible chase into a night of pure magic.

BBL 2026: Jack Wildermuth and Matt Renshaw produce a night to remember

Jack Wildermuth was simply unstoppable, finishing unbeaten on a sensational 110. At the other end, Matt Renshaw matched him shot for shot, hammering a brilliant 102. Together, they rewrote the record books and stunned everyone watching.

Their fearless approach and clean hitting helped Brisbane Heat chase down the target with ease in the end, completing one of the most dramatic comebacks in BBL history.

BBL 2026: A record-breaking night at the Gabba

Fans at the Gabba were treated to nonstop fireworks as both teams went all out with the bat. The match produced a staggering 515 runs and 36 sixes, making it one of the most entertaining games the league has ever seen.

This chase is now the highest successful run chase in Big Bash League history. It also marked the first time in T20 cricket that two batters scored centuries while chasing a target. To add to that, it became the third-highest successful chase in all of T20 cricket.

The game also set another milestone, with 36 sixes being hit, the most ever in a single BBL match.

BBL 2026: Historic partnership seals the deal

Wildermuth and Renshaw put on a breathtaking 212-run partnership for the second wicket, the highest partnership ever recorded in a BBL match. They achieved this in just 95 balls, completely taking the game away from the Scorchers.

The duo also became the first pair to score two centuries in the same Big Bash League match, adding yet another historic moment to an already unforgettable night.

BBL 2026: Scorchers post a huge total

Earlier in the match, the Perth Scorchers looked firmly in control after piling up a massive total of 257. Their innings was built around a brilliant 142-run stand between Cooper Connolly and Finn Allen.

Connolly smashed 77 runs off just 37 balls, while Allen powered his way to 79 off 38 deliveries. It was the second-highest total ever recorded in BBL history and seemed more than enough to secure a win.

BBL 2026: Early setback sparks an incredible turnaround

The Heat’s chase could not have started worse, with Colin Munro dismissed on the very first ball. That early wicket piled on the pressure, and many would have expected the chase to fall apart quickly.

Instead, Renshaw and Wildermuth turned the game on its head. They attacked relentlessly, taking on every Scorchers bowler with confidence and intent. A bit of luck went their way too, as Renshaw survived a no-ball catch and Wildermuth was dropped early.

The Scorchers paid heavily for those missed chances. Max Bryant chipped in with a handy 28 before retiring out, but the night truly belonged to the two centurions who carried the Heat to a famous victory.

BBL 2026: Matt Renshaw reacts to an unforgettable moment

Matt Renshaw was named Player of the Match for his stunning knock and could hardly believe what had just happened. Speaking after the game, he said, “I still don’t really believe it. It’s a bit of a pinch-me moment, lots of goosebumps. An incredible effort. I think a lot of people probably wrote us off, and to be honest, we might have as well after losing a wicket first ball.

But having Wildermuth at the other end was massive. I’ll definitely be sharing the POTM award with him; he deserves probably half of it, maybe more. That never-say-die attitude made all the difference. It was one of those strange ones (partnership) where we didn’t talk too much. It was more about taking the right options, seeing the ball, and hitting it where you needed to.”

For Brisbane Heat fans, this was a night to cherish. For the Big Bash League, it was a reminder of why the tournament continues to deliver moments that feel almost unreal.
