Shreyas Iyer, one of the most talked-about cricketers in the country right now, sent shockwaves through the cricketing world by quitting the India A captaincy just hours before the Australia A game. He also withdrew from the match entirely. Initially, Iyer cited ‘personal reasons’ for his sudden decision to step away.
Shreyas Iyer Opens Up About His Red-Ball Cricket Plans
A report in the Indian Express has now revealed that Shreyas Iyer spoke to the BCCI selection committee about his plans for red-ball cricket in the coming months. He reportedly told the board that he has been facing stiffness in his back, which is preventing him from giving his best in the longest format of the game.

According to the report, Shreyas Iyer said he can’t be on the field for more than four days at a stretch. For that reason, he has decided to take a break from red-ball cricket until his body allows him to play the format comfortably.
The middle-order batter even shared an example from a Ranji Trophy game he played last year, where he had to take frequent breaks between overs. He noted that this approach is not possible during India A or Test cricket assignments.
BCCI Confirms Iyer’s Plans
A BCCI source told a leading media outlet about the discussion Shreyas Iyer had with the board.
“He has informed us that he will be taking a break from red ball cricket and it’s good that he has cleared it out because selectors are now clear about his future. He won’t be playing red ball cricket in coming months and he has informed the board that he will assess his body in future in consultation with physios and trainer and take a call on it,” the source said.

Impact on Upcoming Test Series
Shreyas Iyer was reportedly in contention for the India squad for the two-match home Test series against West Indies, starting October 2. His withdrawal from India A duty comes right before the BCCI squad selection meeting for the series, raising questions about his availability for the upcoming games.
