Bethany Louise Mooney (born 14 January 1994) is a highly qualified Australian cricket player who bats for the national squad in all three formats. She is a wicket-keeper-batter for Western Australia and Perth Scorchers in domestic cricket. She had become the ranked top one batter in Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) cricket in March 2020, at the ending of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020.
Mooney was born in the Victorian town of Shepparton. She has a brother named Tom and a sister named Gabrielle. As a child, she participated in a variety of sports, including soccer, tennis, and Australian rules football. Briefly before her eighth birthday, she was asked to fill in for her brother’s cricket team; that open letter led to her becoming a regular for Kialla Lakes Cricket Club.
Mooney didn’t begin to play cricket in Queensland until one year after moving there. She was selected as the best fielder in her team at that year’s Hervey Bay Zone trials, and the team’s coach recommended her to try wicket-keeping. She was then chosen as a wicket-keeper for the Queensland Primary School girls team, and she later advanced through the junior Queensland girls teams. Meanwhile, because there were no girls cricket teams in remote regions, she started playing for Hervey Bay’s boys’ Cavaliers team until she turned 18 years old.
Mooney was a representative of the Southern Stars squad that captured the ICC World Twenty20 title in Bangladesh in 2014. Mooney debuted for Australia’s women’s national cricket team in a Twenty20 match against India on January 26, 2016 at the Adelaide Oval. She managed to score her first Women’s One Day International (WODI) century against New Zealand on February 26, 2017.
