BGT: History Behind 28 years Of Biggest Rivalry

BGT: The Indian cricket team is going to play the Test series against Australia. The Border Gavaskar Trophy has been scheduled to begin in Australia from 22 November. Before the Border Gavaskar Trophy series begins, know about the history of the Border Gavaskar Trophy and the reasons behind its naming.

The team of India has reached the Australia tour. The Perth Stadium, on 22 November, will witness the first encounter of the 5-match Test series between the two teams. The Test series between India and Australia is popularly known as the BGT. The second match will be played in Adelaide from December 6, the third in Brisbane from December 14, the fourth in Melbourne from December 26 and the 5th match of the series will be played in Sydney from January 3. By the way, the Test series has been played between India and Australia since 1947. 50 Test matches were played between the two teams till 1996. Then in 1996, it was named the BGT. The series is named in honor of Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar and former Australian captain Allan Border. At that time, these two batsmen had more than 10 thousand runs in Test cricket. The first BGT match was played between the two countries back in 1996-1997.

The Indian team was the winner 10 times out of 16.

So far, 16 BGTs have been played between the two teams. In this, India has won 10 series, out of which two wins are in Australia. Australia has won 5. The series held in 2003–04 was tied 1-1. Australia has won the trophy once in India. Australia last won this prestigious trophy in 2014-15. After that India was the winner in four series.

The Border Gavaskar Trophy is basically a four-match series. For the first time, this series will be played for five matches. The last time a 5-match Test series was played between India and Australia was in 1991-92. Australia won that on their home soil with a straight 4-0 victory. The only Test series between the two teams was a 5-match series held in 1979-80. India won with a margin of 2-0. This was India’s first Test series win over Australia before the BGT began.
