Bhuvaneshwar Kumar’s Poor Performance in the Death Over is the Real Concern: Sunil Gavaskar

Don’t forget, Australia are world champions. They are expected to do extraordinary things: Sunil Gavaskar

‘The curse’ of the 19th over continues for Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. After the skipper of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, the legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, has now raised concern over Bhuvaneshwar’s poor performance in the death overs. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has leaked quite a lot of runs in the death overs in the last few crucial matches.

Recently, Bhuvneshwar’s average deliveries in the death over allowed Australia to beat India in the first T20I in Mohali on Tuesday, September 20. Kumar leaked 16 runs in the death over as Matthew Wade managed to hit three consecutive fours. Australia managed to pull off a record chase of 209 against India.

Responding to the poor deliveries by Bhuvaneshwar in the death over, the legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said “I really don’t think there was too much dew. We didn’t see the fielders or bowlers trying to use the towel to try and dry their fingers. That’s not an excuse. We didn’t bowl well. For example, the 19th over… that’s a real concern.

Furthermore, Gavaskar raised a criticism on Bhuvi’s experience and said “Somebody like Bhuvneshwar Kumar is going for runs every single time, when he is expected. In 18 deliveries he has bowled in three matches against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and now Australia, he has given away 49 runs. It is almost three runs per ball. Somebody with his experience and calibre, you expect he will give 35-36 runs in those 18 deliveries. That really is an area of concern.

The former skipper of the Indian cricket team firmly stated that India has not been able to defend good scores in the recent matches. The skipper also hoped for better days with Bumrah’s comeback in the team. Gavaskar assured that Bumrah’s comeback would definitely turn the tables around for the Indian cricket team because Bumrah has the ability to take off wickets in the crucial overs. Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since the July series against England. According to the reports, Bumrah is recovering from a back injury.

In his concluding statement, the legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, applauded England for their extraordinary game play and warned the men in blue team to keep an eye on their performance. “Don’t forget, Australia are world champions. They are expected to do extraordinary things,” Gavaskar added.
