Big Bash League: Highest 1st Wicket Partnership – Records and Statistics

4 Min Read

In the BBL’s history, there have been many memorable alliances, and a few of them have even been immortalised in history. These middle-infield combos have been so strong that the other club has never had a response for them, and both batters have scored a lot of runs.

Hilton Cartwright and Marcus Stoinis (207 Runs):

This is the biggest partnership in the BBL tournament’s history, and it is a score that, by itself, will be a fantastic team total in T20 cricket. This was one of the most destructive opening partnerships in history, particularly for Marcus Stoinis who was in an obnoxious mood that day and no opposition bowler was safe in his presence as he dispatched everyone and made the highest score by a player in BBL History. His partner also scored a brilliant half century, and it will take one extraordinary partnership to break this current record. For Melbourne Stars supporters, it was a delight.

Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short (203 Runs):

In this outstanding duo, both of these graceful left-handed bats demonstrated why they have long been regarded as BBL legends. This was a real lesson in how to bat and how to knock massive sixes while still putting together a sizable partnership of more than 200 runs. Particularly on that day, Matthew Wade was in a highly destructive mood, scoring 130 runs in just 61 balls with seven massive sixes. He was well supported by D’Arcy Short, who added a respectable 72 runs, and both of them cemented their names in the annals of cricket history with this combination.

Michael Klinger and Shaun Marsh (171* Runs):

When they were chasing a total of 171 to win the match, these two incredibly brilliant hitters formed a phenomenal connection. They each scored 76 not out and 90 not out respectively after completely dismantling the Melbourne Renegades bowling attack as the Perth Scorchers’ opening pair. They didn’t drop a wicket throughout the entire innings. This was an illustration of how to chase a high total in a game with 20 overs.

Luke Wright and Rob Quiney (172 Runs):

This was a typical batting partnership where one batsman took the initiative while the other acted as the foundation of the innings. Rob Quiney was the anchor and made a well-organized score of 62 runs. Their partnership allowed the Melbourne Stars post a total of over 200 in their innings. Luke Wright began hammering from ball one and scored a fantastic century with the help of 9 sixes in just 60 balls.

The opening pair’s Big Bash League T20 first wicket partnership with the highest average

Only twice, both in the 2019–20 season of the BBL T20, did the opening partnership score 200+ runs together. The Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright hold the Big Bash League record for the highest first wicket partnership. Together, they outscored the Sydney Sixers by 207 runs.

Both 200+ partnerships were completed in the first inning of the game, and in both partnerships, the batting tandem hit 11 sixes.
