Borussia Dortmund showcased a dominant performance as they secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Bundesliga, narrowing the gap to third-placed Stuttgart. The Friday match saw Donyell Malen’s clinical brace and a well-rounded team effort that left Dortmund in control from start to finish.
Taking control early on, Borussia Dortmund applied pressure, with Malen testing Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with an impressive overhead kick just 13 minutes into the game. The Dutchman broke the deadlock shortly after, capitalizing on Niclas Fullkrug’s square pass to drill the ball into the top right corner.
Despite Freiburg’s attempts to respond, Dortmund remained in charge. The Austrian international Michael Gregoritsch had a chance with a header in the 21st minute, but Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel stood firm.

Freiburg’s goalkeeper remained busy throughout the match, making crucial saves to deny Fullkrug and Marco Reus. Dortmund continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, with Ian Maatsen hitting the woodwork before Fullkrug sealed the deal with a header from Julian Brandt’s cross in the 87th minute.
With this convincing win, Borussia Dortmund solidified their fourth spot in the Bundesliga table, while Freiburg suffered their third consecutive defeat, holding onto the seventh position.
Commenting on the performance, Donyell Malen stated, “We started with the right intensity against Freiburg and scored our goals at the right moments. With the lead, we were able to focus on counterattacks and score more goals.”
Dortmund coach Edin Terzic praised his team, saying, “We controlled the proceedings from the kick-off. We defended very well and staged a focused and disciplined performance. It was our best performance in 2024.”
