BPL: Unpaid Dues Faces Another Controversy On The Line

5 Min Read

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has again landed in controversy with allegations of match-fixing and player exploitation being added to the long list of issues that plague the competition. The latest incident has highlighted the alarming situation of international and local players as well as other staff involved in the league. The Darbar Rajshahi players, which included international cricketers from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe, are still being left waiting to receive their pay. Adding fuel to the fire is a severe confrontation with the team’s bus driver, who has surprisingly stood up for his rights over the non-payment of wages.

Salary Issues: International Players Left Waiting

Unfortunately for the Darbar Rajshahi side, the foreign players of the team have also been thrown into a frustrating limbo regarding their unpaid dues. The list is pretty long with notable names including Mohammad Haris of Pakistan, Afghanistan’s Aftab Alam, and Ryan Burl of Zimbabwe waiting for their salary. Some are said to be paid partially amounting to 25% of the payment but others haven’t even got a penny to their name for the services they rendered in the league.

This unpaid wages issue has set a storm in the BPL, with international players speaking out against the tournament’s management and frustration mounting. This raises grave concerns over the financial management of the league and its capacity to honor commitments made to local and foreign players.

The Bus Driver’s Bold Stand

The situation took a dramatic turn when Mohammad Babul, the bus driver who was supposed to take the Darbar Rajshahi team across the country, entered the scene. Babul, like the players, had not been paid for his services. In a shocking turn of events, he locked the kit bags of the players inside the team’s bus and held them hostage until the outstanding payments were settled.

His movements drew widespread attention to himself as the driver made it clear that he would not give them back until the league paid off. Babul spoke to the press outside a team hotel, demonstrating where the pressure was seeping through: “It is a matter of regret and shame.

If they had paid us, we would have returned the kit bags to the players.”. Till now I have not opened my mouth, but now I am saying that if they pay us, then we can go. The kit bags of local and foreign cricketers are in the bus, but I cannot give them because a large part of our hard work has not been paid yet.”* His actions have only painted a rather grim picture of the league’s internal issues and the desperation and discontent of those who work behind the scenes.

Rajshahi Team Eliminated from BPL

This whole financial controversy has also affected the performance of Darbar Rajshahi in the tournament. While they won six out of 12 matches, the side was eliminated from the Bangladesh Premier League. In a league of seven teams, Rajshahi could finish only at 5th place, missing out on the cut for the knockout stage. That, combined with the current payment issue, has really spoilt the BPL’s reputation for this season.

A League in Crisis

The financial crises of the Bangladesh Premier League can no longer be ignored. When the allegations of match-fixing, unpaid wages, and a bus driver’s protest all mix together, they form a perfect storm that will leave the Bangladesh Premier League’s credibility and reputation dented and bruised. The players as well as staff feel exploited and disrespected, with seemingly little to redress their concerns.

The league, however, needs to see how it will address all these serious concerns that have surfaced by this incident and eventually regain confidence in its operations with the progression of the season. Already, it has brought in some important questions regarding the financial transparency of cricket leagues all around the world, now under scanner by the fans as well as the world cricket fraternity itself.
