Brazilian footballer William Ribeiro was arrested for kicking the referee in a football match. The victim, referee Rodrigo Crivellaro was laying on the ground when the incident happened.

William Ribeiro kicked referee Rodrigo Crivellaro twice during Monday’s match between Sao Paulo and Guarani de Venancio Aires. The second time, the official was laying on the ground.

Consequently, Crivellaro was knocked unconscious and was taken to a local hospital. As a result, the match was suspended immediately. Ribeiro was arrested at the stadium and charged with attempted murder.

Crivellaro was released from the hospital Tuesday morning. The referee had not seen the incident and told the reporters that he is yet to see the footage.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian footballer William Ribeiro is subject to custody during the investigation. However, a police investigator said it is up to the judge. Vinicius Assuno, police investigator told journalists that a judge will decide whether Ribeiro will remain in custody during the investigation or be released on bail.

Vinicius Assuno on the incident:

“His attack was very strong and violent, kicking the referee in the head and making him pass out. The referee had no chance of defending himself.”

Meanwhile, the player’s contract was terminated by the club. The club has confirmed that and stated it was one of the saddest incidents in its history. The suspended match will be resumed next week on Tuesday. Monday was the club’s 123rd anniversary.
