The Indian cricket team suffered a major blow during the first T20I against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on 28th September, 2022, when the skipper of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, announced that the premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah would not be a part of India’s playing XI against South Africa due to his back fracture.
The pace spearhead bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, made a much anticipated comeback in the second T20I against Australia in Nagpur after the management decided to drop Bhuvaneshwar Kumar from India’s playing XI over death cover concerns. The ace bowler made a storming comeback in Nagpur and bowled 2 out of 8 overs in the second T20I against The Aussies. The signature Yorkers of Bumrah gave a tough time to Australia’s class batter, Steve Smith. The pace spearhead picked off one of the most crucial wickets of the Australian skipper, Aaron Finch.
The remarkable contribution of Jasprit Bumrah, who made a storming comeback post his lower back injury, gave a strong momentum to the Indian cricket team. After phenomenal gameplay against Australia in the last two matches, the supporters of the Indian team were expecting Bumrah to be a part of India’s playing XI against South Africa in the T20I series, too. The expectations were wrecked apart a few seconds before the match when the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, announced that due to his back injury, Jasprit Bumrah had been dropped from India’s playing XI against South Africa on Wednesday.
A few minutes before the toss took place, the BCCI announced Bumrah’s withdrawal from the opening match of the T20I series against South Africa in a tweet. A few minutes before the match, The BCCI posted a shocking tweet that read, “Jasprit Bumrah complained of back pain during the practice session in India on Tuesday. BCCI’s medical team assessed him. He was excluded from the first T20I.” The tweet surrounded the bowling unit of India with a lot of speculations.
According to sources, a senior BCCI official hinted at Jasprit Bumrah’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup. The anonymous BCCI official clearly mentioned that Bumrah is currently suffering from a serious back condition and he would definitely not be in a position to play for India for at least the next 6 months. “It’s a stress fracture and Bumrah cannot be expected to make a comeback on the field before at least 6 months.” The BCCI official said.
The bowling unit of India has been under scan since the Asia Cup. The skipper of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, has himself pointed out that a lot of work needs to be done when it comes to the bowling department of the Indian cricket team. The legendary cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar have also criticised experienced bowlers like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for leaking out runs in the crucial overs.
If sources are to be believed, the premier pacer of India, Jasprit Bumrah, has been ruled-out from the T20 World Cup series. Although the bowling unit of India is quite strong and consists of young-age pacers like Chahar and Arshdeep, the absence of the senior star player, Jasprit Bumrah, would definitely affect the team’s performance in the coming matches.
