Umran Malik Ruled Out of IPL 2025: "KKR Replaces Him With..."
Renowned West Indies cricketer Brian Lara holds a positive outlook for the young Indian fast-bowler, Umran Malik. Lara acknowledges Malik’s youthful age and envisions a bright future ahead in his cricketing journey. Alongside this optimism, Lara also emphasizes that speed alone shouldn’t be Malik’s sole weapon on the field.
In the eight T20 international matches that Malik has participated in since his debut in June 2022, he has managed to secure 11 wickets, maintaining an economy rate of 10.48. Notably, Malik hasn’t yet been part of the ongoing series against the West Indies.
During the preceding One Day International (ODI) series, Malik featured in two matches; however, he was unable to secure any wickets. His performance in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season was also observed, where he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in seven matches, achieving five wickets with an economy rate of 10.35. Incidentally, Brian Lara served as the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL.
Lara shared his insights on a YouTube show called ‘Wake Up With Sorabh’, emphasizing that while Malik possesses the potential to become a sensation, he must swiftly comprehend that the world’s finest players aren’t easily troubled by fast bowling alone. Lara suggests that Malik needs to develop his ball-handling abilities, exercise sensibility, and discern when to maintain a steady pace or escalate his tempo. The seasoned cricketer acknowledges Malik’s youthful age and anticipates many promising years ahead in his career.
Malik’s breakthrough in the IPL came in 2022 after garnering attention during the 2021 season. He impressed with his performance, securing 22 wickets from 14 matches with an average of 20.18 and an economy rate of 9.03, which earned him the Emerging Player of the Tournament award.
Lara, aged 54, offers advice to Malik, advising him to learn from the experiences of other illustrious fast bowlers and to work closely with Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling coach, the legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn. Lara emphasizes the diverse range of skills these great bowlers had to develop beyond raw speed, mentioning examples such as Wasim Akram, Malcolm Marshall, and Michael Holding. He believes that if Malik collaborates with Dale Steyn, he has the potential to become one of India’s finest cricketing talents.
