Brian Charles Lara (born May 2, 1969) is a retired Trinidadian international cricketer who is widely regarded as one of the biggest and best batsmen of all time. He surpassed the Test batting standings on several circumstances and holds numerous cricketing records, such as the greatest score in first-class cricket, 501 not-out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994, the only quintuple-hundred in first-class sporting history.
Lara also retains the record for the greatest individual score in a Test innings, scoring 400 not out against England in the fourth test in Antigua in 2004. Lara also held the world record for the most runs scored in a single over in a Test match for eighteen years when he managed to score 28 runs off an over by South African Robin Peterson in 2003.
Wisden ranks Lara’s match-winning 153 not out against Australia in Bridgetown, Barbados in 1999 as the second-best batting playing ability in Test cricket history, trailing only Sir Donald Bradman’s 270 runs in the 1937 Ashes Test match. Muttiah Muralitharan has described Lara as the toughest opponent he has faced in his career. Lara was named Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World in 1994 and 1995 and is one of only three cricketers to be named BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, alongside Sir Garfield Sobers and Shane Warne.
On November 27, 2009, Brian Lara was named an honorary member of the Order of Australia. He was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame as a 2012-13 season inductee in September 2012. Lara became the 31st West Indian to be awarded Honorary Life Membership in the MCC in 2013. Brian Lara is popular and widely affectionately called as “The Prince of Port of Spain” or absolutely “The Prince”. He has the questionable privilege of having played in the second-highest number of test matches (63) in which his team lost, trailing only Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
