Buenos Aires Returns As MotoGP Host In 2027 After 30 Years

After almost 30 years, MotoGP is officially returning to Buenos Aires in 2027. The capital of Argentina will be the new home for the nation’s MotoGP round, replacing Termas de Río Hondo, which has hosted the event since 2014. This move brings premier motorcycle racing back to a city with a deep motorsport history.

Where Will The Race Take Place

The race will take place at the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez, a track just outside Buenos Aires. The venue last hosted a MotoGP race in 1999, so the return marks a major moment for the circuit and local fans. According to Buenos Aires Chief of Government Jorge Macri, “We are consolidating our city’s sporting leadership on a global level. The most important category of motorcycle racing returns to Gálvez. We have hosted ten Grands Prix, and almost 30 years later, we will once again be among the world’s leading circuits, like Barcelona and Silverstone”.

To ensure the track meets modern MotoGP standards, a detailed renovation will begin in October 2025. These updates will touch every part of the facility, from the track and pits to the paddock and safety zones. International firm Tilke Engineers & Architects will handle the work, with an investment exceeding $100 million planned over two phases. Macri said the improvements will include “infrastructure, security, logistics, and connectivity,” all to bring the iconic circuit up to international expectations.

A Legendary Race In Buenos Aires In Contention

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta called the news a boost for racing on the continent. “It’s a great venue and puts us close to the heart of Buenos Aires, which will be a flagship location not only in terms of the country and continent, but globally too,” Ezpeleta explained. “The passion of the crowds we’ve seen at recent Grands Prix in Argentina, who come from far and wide, is legendary and we’re excited to let them know where we’ll see them again – and when”.

The move is expected to have a significant economic impact. Estimates suggest the event could bring around $150 million to the city and generate hundreds of jobs across the hospitality, tourism, transportation, and service sectors. Macri stated, “Bringing MotoGP to the city means the arrival of an elite competition, with the most important international teams and riders, which will be enjoyed by around 150,000 people at the track and millions of viewers via television and streaming in more than 200 territories”.

Is F1 Next?

This MotoGP return is about more than just one event. Local authorities also see it as a step towards bringing Formula 1 back to Buenos Aires. “But we’re going for more: this is the first step toward applying again to host Formula 1,” Macri added. The city once held the F1 Argentine Grand Prix, with racing legends like Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher competing at this same venue.

For fans in Argentina and Latin America, the excitement for MotoGP’s return to Buenos Aires is matched by the investment and planning to make the 2027 race a global highlight on the motorsport calendar.
