After the defending world champions were defeated in Bangladesh’s Twenty20 series with one match remaining, captain Jos Buttler defended England’s unconventional team choices.
The home team won the first T20 match by six wickets and then won the second T20 match in Dhaka by four wickets on Sunday.
It served as a wake-up call for England’s typically brutal white-ball team because the World Cup’s 50-over matches will be played in India later this year on similarly challenging low-bounce pitches.
In the previous one-day series, Buttler’s team defeated Bangladesh, but Will Jacks, a batsman, suffered an injury and was not replaced.
T20 World Cup champions Harry Brook and Ben Stokes missed their post-Test obligations.
After his team was bowled out for 117 in a low-scoring match on Sunday, Buttler said, “It’s a different balance and it’s a different kind of feel to the team.
“I think we need to expose guys, particularly those who, under these circumstances, also will likely participate in the 50-over World Cup.
It seemed like a fantastic opportunity to show off the all-rounders’ batting, perhaps one spot higher than they might be in a typical team.
Buttler defended the decision not to select any replacements, saying: “It felt like instead of selecting someone else, trying to use some guys who will be exposed to these conditions in the 50-over World Cup.”
Buttler lavished praise on his bowlers, calling it “an outstanding bowling display,” as Bangladesh reached their goal with seven balls remaining.
The captain stated, “On another day, we’ll probably pick up a couple more wickets in those middle overs and thought we did well to sort of put so much pressure on Bangladesh.
Jofra Archer, a fast bowler who has had difficulty in the past two years due to back and elbow injuries, was especially impressive.
He finished with 3-13, giving England a chance.
The third game in the T20 series will be played on Tuesday in Dhaka.
