Three nations including Canada, Nigeria and India made the bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030. The countries said that they have met the March 31 deadline to express interest in hosting the games.
Commonwealth Sport, however, stated that it was not yet ready to release a final list of interested parties that filed ahead of the due date.
Commonwealth Games 2030 Biddings
Canada’s bid
It has been learnt that Commonwealth Sport Canada, with the backing of the federal government, four provincial governments and the Indigenous community, submitted an EOI to engage Commonwealth Sport in the co-creation and collaboration phase of the Commonwealth Games 2030 bid process.
Canada’s bid, if successful, will allow the country to host the centenary edition as it was the host of the first ever CWG event in Hamilton in 1930. It was then known as the British Empire Games.
Nigeria’s bid
Abuja, the Nigerian capital has also bid to host the multi-sport event. If the bid is accepted, Nigeria would become the first African country to host these Games.
It is worth remembering that the last time Nigeria hosted a major multi-sport tournament was in 2003, when the All-Africa Games were held precisely in the capital. The experience gained that year served to demonstrate the African nation’s skill in effectively organising large-scale international competitions.
“That track record will provide a solid foundation for Nigeria to host again, demonstrating its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required for such events,” says the NOC statement. “This would also provide a compelling narrative about the nation’s progress and readiness.”
India’s bid
Commonwealth Sport’s president Chris Jenkins hinted that he saw India as a major country for the Commonwealth Games at least till 2034. He had visited India twice in the last two years in order to gauge India’s interest to host the Games.
The Indian sports ministry so far had no competitions from any other country to host the Games as there was no other country in contention.
Hosting the 2030 edition was seen as a stepping stone as India has also registered an interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.

The host nation’s name will be announced in November after a vote during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly. All interested countries are expected to formally submit the proposal by August 31.
The Commonwealth Games have hit rough patches ever since Victoria, Australia, pulled out due to rising costs. Subsequently, Glasgow stepped in to host next year’s edition, although several sports including boxing, wrestling, hockey, cricket, badminton and shooting have all been shelved from the programme.
