Canadian Open: Emma Raducanu Finds Her Form After DC Setback

Emma Raducanu makes a winning start to the Canadian Open in Montreal by surpassing Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Rusein a 6-2, 6-4 victory on Monday (28 July). 

The Brit now advances to the round of 64. 

The 22-year-old overcame a shaky start and took a game or two to find her rhythm. After two games down, she clinched four consecutive games to take the first set 6-2. 

The second set saw more tussle and Raducanu broke for a second time in the set for a 5-4 lead. She held serve a final time for the victory.

“Elena is a good friend of mine and it’s difficult to play someone you know but I’m happy with how I put that to one side,” Raducanu said post win.

“It’s also good to back up a good week last week in DC.”

With this win, the Brit continues her fine form having reached the semi-finals of the Washington Open last week.

She will face 32nd seed American Peyton Stearns in the second round, who defeated Venus Williams In the second round of Washington Open. .

But fellow Briton Katie Boulter fell at the first hurdle, losing 6-1 7-5 against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua.

Since losing against world number one Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon earlier in July, Raducanu has produced a strong comeback with four victories from five appearances on hard courts.

If she gets past Stearns in Montreal, she might face American fifth seed and 2025 Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova in the third round.
