ICC has scheduled a board meeting on November 29, which will clarify the workings of the Champions Trophy. This meeting will try to look for a solution where a hybrid model is rejected by Pakistan and India are unwilling to travel to Pakistan. ESPNcricinfo learned that this meeting is scheduled to be virtual and will be decided by the collective decision of the ICC Board.
This eight-team tournament is to be played between 19 February and March. The schedule of the tournament has not been formally announced yet. Till now, ICC has been announcing the schedule of global tournaments 100 days before the start of the tournament.
Reason behind no decision regarding hosting of Champions Trophy 2025
The reason for not yet announcing the schedule is due to the Indian government’s decision not to allow Rohit Sharma’s team to travel to Pakistan. It has been two weeks since they have informed ICC about the same. PCB was allotted the hosting rights of Champions Trophy in 2021 itself and PCB has requested ICC to mention the reasons for BCCI not travelling. According to a PCB official, they have not received any response from ICC in this regard.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is keen on staging the tournament, which is to be held in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, entirely in Pakistan. Last week, he said that he was prepared to discuss with BCCI the deadlock arising over the organization of the tournament. An ICC spokesperson confirmed this meeting on Friday but PCB has not yet commented on this issue.
The ICC Board comprises members from 12 full member countries and three representatives from associate countries, the ICC chairman and CEO along with an independent director. Greg Barclay is currently the chairman of ICC and this will be his last meeting under his chairmanship before he retires on December 1. He will be replaced by BCCI secretary Jay Shah after this.
