Saim Ayub, the talented young cricket star of Pakistan, has been ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy after sustaining a right ankle fracture during Pakistan’s tour of South Africa in January. The promising player has not been able to return to the field for quite some time due to this injury, and there is no definite news regarding his return to competitive cricket. Ayub is expected to be sidelined for at least five more weeks, meaning he will not be available for the prestigious tournament.
Injury Sustained During South Africa Tour

Saim Ayub’s injury occurred during the Cape Town Test match against South Africa, which was part of Pakistan’s tour in January. While fielding, Ayub was chasing a ball towards the third boundary when he lost his balance and twisted his ankle. Despite receiving on-the-field treatment, Ayub could not return to play and was eventually stretchered off the field. The injury resulted in a fractured right ankle for the 22-year-old player, requiring him to receive medical attention. His first public sighting after the injury occurred while walking on crutches, and he was accompanied out of the field to the medical booth for further assessment.
Recovery and Outlook for Future Tours
According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Ayub is currently recovering well in England, where he is continuing his rehabilitation. Despite his positive recovery progress, Ayub will be out of action for a minimum of 10 weeks since the injury occurred. This timeline has ruled him out of the Champions Trophy, which is set to take place soon. His availability for Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand, which follows the Champions Trophy, also remains doubtful.
The Pakistan Cricket Board had initially thought that Ayub would take a shorter time to recover and had even said that he would be fit for the Champions Trophy in six weeks. However, with Ayub’s absence from the squad named for the tournament, it was realized that the recovery process would take longer than thought.
The Champions Trophy and the New Zealand Tour
For Pakistan, the Champions Trophy is a vital international event, and thus, Ayub’s exclusion from the team certainly can give them a tough break as they are now cornered to readjust their entire plan and strategy.
Pakistan travels to New Zealand right after the Champions Trophy for a series of eight white-ball matches, comprising five T20Is and three ODIs. The tour will take place between March 16 and April 5, immediately after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy. This means that Ayub will also miss the early part of the New Zealand tour if his recovery is better than expected.
Future Engagements and PSL Team Engagement
Another congested schedule in-store is the engagement with Pakistan Super League. The Pakistani contingent will engage the PSL starting from April 8. It is one of the world’s biggest T20 leagues with many cricketers playing from all corners of the world. However, the question of whether Ayub will feature in the PSL is uncertain because the period for recovery will confirm this.
If Ayub continues his rehabilitation as planned, he might be back on the cricket field in time for the PSL, but this will depend on his fitness levels and medical clearance.
A Setback for Saim Ayub and Pakistan

Such a long-term injury in Saim Ayub has gone as a shocking blow to himself and for his country team cricket. Now without such an enormous young talent of Pakistan in this Champions Trophy along with the New Zealand series, adjustments will be taken by the national team to the absence. Pakistan will now turn more towards the potential players to carry on their potential and give adequate support during the series.
For Ayub, the immediate goal is full recovery, and the cricketing world will all be waiting to see him in action once more when he regains full fitness. His character and talent make him a good player to look out for, and there’s hope that once recovered, he will add much to Pakistan’s cricketing future.
