Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea on 26th Jan 2021. His first match as a Chelsea coach was a goalless draw at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers. A match that set the record for most possession (78.9%) and passes completed (820) for a manager’s first Premier League game. This was a start to the records incoming.

With a 2-0 win over Everton on 8th March, Tuchel’s unbeaten run extended to eleven games. He became the first coach in Premier League history to keep consecutive home clean sheets in their first five home matches. After winning both the legs of the Round of 16 in the Champions League this year against Atletico Madrid, Tuchel was unbeaten in 13 games, setting the record for the longest unbeaten run by a head coach in Chelsea’s history.

Chelsea also has beaten Manchester City by 1-0 in the semi-finals of the FA cup. What makes Tuchel so good with the same team and players Lampard struggled with? First of all, Tuchel has a lot of coaching experience under his belt. Before coming to Chelsea, Tuchel had 12 years of coaching experience with Mainz, Dortmund, and Paris Saint Germain. With Paris, he won 2 Ligue 1 titles,1 Coupe de France, and Helped the team reach the Champions League final in 2020.

Tuchel’s Tactics are very dynamic. He can adapt to different formations as per the team’s requirements and players’ capabilities. With Paris, he went with 4-3-3 whereas with Chelsea he generally goes with a 3-4-3.  He uses his fullbacks to come forward and help the attackers in the game. The most important thing with the German coach is that he understands players’ emotions and confidence.

Timo Werner was brought to Chelsea by the previous coach Frank Lampard. Timo struggled under the English coach to find his best form. Tuchel saw that he was lacking that confidence in scoring goals. So, he changed his role. Werner started getting assists for other team members. He brought the best out of Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz using them as strikers instead of Werner. His dressing room seems happy with him as he keeps rotating players and gives every player a chance to play and prove.

The way Chelsea are playing this season, we might see them lifting a lot of trophies in the coming time.
