Chennaiyin FC Aims to Extend Unbeaten Run Against Delhi FC in 132nd Durand Cup

Chennaiyin FC, a two-time champion of the Indian Super League (ISL), is all set to extend its unbeaten streak as they prepare to face Delhi FC in their final Group E encounter of the 132nd Durand Cup 2023. The match is scheduled to take place at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.

Under the guidance of Owen Coyle, Chennaiyin FC has exhibited a strong performance in the tournament, securing a spot in the quarter-finals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tribhuwan Army. The goals in the previous match were scored by Farukh Choudhary, Rahim Ali, and Rafael Crivellaro.

With six points to their name, the Marina Machans currently lead the standings in their group. Despite their quarter-finals berth being confirmed, defender Aakash Sangwan emphasized the team’s commitment to winning their final group-stage match against Delhi FC. Sangwan highlighted the team’s positive momentum and clean sheet in the last match but stated that their mentality remains unchanged as they approach the upcoming clash.

Aakash Sangwan expressed his excitement ahead of the match against Delhi FC. Having played with several players in Delhi FC during his time representing Minerva, Sangwan is eager to face his former teammates and prove Chennaiyin FC’s superiority.

Sangwan stated, “I am very excited for the match because you know I have played with most of the players in Delhi FC. I used to represent Minerva back in the day. So, I am very excited to play against all of the Punjabi guys as I have a great bond with them and I want to prove that we are the better team.”

The ongoing 132nd edition of the Durand Cup, known as Asia’s oldest football competition, features a total of 24 teams from various leagues, including the ISL, I-League, and the Armed Forces. The participating teams have been divided into six groups, each consisting of four teams.

The format of the tournament dictates that the top team from each group, along with the two best second-placed teams from all six groups, will advance to the quarter-finals. As the action unfolds, the competition is set to intensify as teams strive to make their mark in this prestigious tournament.
