Clive Rice was born in Johannesburg on Jul 23, 1949. Clive started playing cricket with the Transvaal Nuffield XI in 1967 and showed signs of being a good all-rounder, earning him a promotion to the Transvaal B squad in 1969/70. In 1970/71, he was promoted to the Transvaal A squad and invited to tour Australia with the Springbok cricket team. Due to SA’s racial practices in sports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) prohibited the tour. Natal’s 1971/72 captain was Rice. From 1975 through 1987, Nottinghamshire County Club in England drew him. In 1981, his team won the double. Transvaal won five Castle Cups, five Nissan Shields, and three Benson and Hedges Series under Rice’s captaincy in 1981/82. Scotland’s 1988/89 captain was Rice. In 1991, Rice captained South Africa’s ICC re-admission match against India.
Rice was omitted from the 1992 World Cricket Cup in Australia and New Zealand due to his age. Cricket observers claimed that the selectors did not want to embarrass one of South Africa’s finest cricketers by saying he had passed his time. Instead, he was hired by Channel 9 to commentate on the same event. In 1995, Rice founded the Rand Afrikaans University Academy and the Plascon Cricket Academy. The following year, he captained South Africa to master cricket in Bombay.
