He did try his best to return to his old form, but it was just not possible for him to reach his old standard, and ultimately, on 8 January 1971, his retirement was announced.

After his retirement from cricket, Milburn went on to coach young talent. He also began to work in radio commentary, where his experience greatly helped.
He passed away in 1990 on 20th February after collapsing from a heart attack at just 48 years old.
