Connection to Saudi Arabia
Due to claims of sports washing, the WWE events advertised in Saudi Arabia have come under fire. WWE has been charged of encouraging Saudi Arabia’s discrimination against women and LGBT individuals by hosting events there.
WWE’s relationship with Saudi Arabia has drawn criticism from lawmakers and activist groups including Code Pink.
Charges of Misconduct Against Vince McMahon
When Rita Chatterton, a former referee known for her time as Rita Marie in the WWF in the 1980s as well as being the first female referee in the WWF (potentially in professional wrestling history), appeared on Geraldo Rivera’s program Now It Can Be Told on April 3, 1992, one of the first accusations against Vince McMahon was made. On July 16, 1986, she said that McMahon tried to coerce her into having oral sex with him in his limo; when she refused, he allegedly raped her. Leonard Inzitari, a former wrestler, has verified Chatterton’s claim. A worker at a tanning salon in Boca Raton, Florida, accused McMahon of sexual harassment on February 1 of that year, some years later.
The fact that McMahon was in Miami for the 2006 Royal Rumble first made the accusation seem to be unfounded. It soon became clear that although the purported crime was reported to police on the Rumble Day, it had occurred the day before. As a consequence of the investigation, it was stated on March 25 that McMahon wouldn’t face any charges.
Activist investor Emmanuel Lemelson demanded new management or the sale of the company in 2014 after claiming that he thought the corporation had materially misrepresented its financial reporting. The market capitalization of the shares fell by $800 million as a result of Lemelson’s findings.
The WWE board started looking into a $3 million hush-money settlement McMahon made over an alleged relationship with a former worker of the organization in April 2022. The probe also turned up more nondisclosure agreements worth a total of $12 million that were connected to allegations of misbehaviour made against McMahon and executive John Laurinaitis by other women working at the organization. On July 22, 2022, McMahon eventually announced his retirement from all of his posts as a result of this, and the WWE had a shift in leadership for the first time in 40 years since 1982.
Vince McMahon paid unreported payments totalling $19.6 million between 2006 and 2022, which the corporation would subsequently disclose.
