County Championship 2023: Surrey creates history against Kent

9 Min Read

Surrey created history against Kent in County Championship 2023. Their chase of 501 is the second-highest chase in County Championship history after Middlesex’s chase of 502 against Nottinghamshire in 1925. Dom Sibley played a great marathon inning alongside Ben Foakes and Jamie Smith in the fourth innings to script history.

Surrey creates history

Sibley opened the batting for Surrey and remained not out as he scored 140 runs in 415 balls. His knock meant that he stayed at the crease for close to 10 hours. Batting at 4 Jamie Smith played a ‘Bazball’ style of knock as he scored 114 runs in just 77 balls striking at an excess of 148. Smith was dismissed by the young Indian pacer, Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep rattled his stumps on his County debut. Wicket Keeper Foakes joined Sibley and shared a 200-run-plus stand. Foakes scored 124 runs off 211 balls before being dismissed. For Kent, Arshdeep took two wickets while Wes Agar, Hamidullah Qadri and Joe Denly took one wicket each.

First Innings

Kent batted first and scored 301 runs after a shaky start from the top and middle order. They were 5 wickets down with just 41 runs on the board as Daniel Bell-Drummond, Joe Denly and captain Jack Leaning were dismissed for ducks. A century from wicketkeeper Jordan Cox and half-centuries from Joey Evison and Wes Agar helped them reach the 300-run mark. For Surrey, Sean Abbott was the pick of the bowlers as he took 4 wickets. Jordan Clark and Gus Atkinson took two wickets each while Daniel Worrall and Dan Moriarty took one wicket each.
