Cricket Tourism in India : Evolution and Growth

Cricket tourism is a growing industry in India, a country on the Asian Continent, where travel and sports coexist. Crock has entertained the general populace in India since very early times. The ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2011 opened a fresh avenue to market Indian tourism to the foreign land after the 2010 Commonwealth Games fervour had barely subsided in India. Most travel agencies and tour operators in India appear to be taking advantage of the opportunity to shift the perception of sports tourism by creating packages around the tournament as cricket madness gains momentum in the nation with a significant cricket obsession. In this article, we will take a look at the evolution and growth of cricket tourism in India and how it has impacted the culture of sports in India and strengthened global relations.

India’s most popular sport is cricket, which is played virtually all throughout the nation and in many of its major cities. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the organization responsible for overseeing cricket in India. It organizes all domestic competitions and selects players for both the men’s and women’s national teams. Early in the 1800s, the British introduced cricket to the Indian subcontinent. The first recorded game of cricket was played in 1721. Gujarati Kolis, who were sea pirates and outlaws who used to pillage British ships, played and embraced it. Cricket was used by the East India Company to govern the Kolis, and they were successful.

British networks offered nonstop live coverage of international matches in the late 1980s. This had a significant impact on the development of cricket as we know it today. The development of specialized television networks and modern technology helped raise awareness of the sport globally. Cricket was included in the 24 hours of nonstop live coverage that ESPN and Star Sports had to produce. The Eastern world became more widely known worldwide. A domestic league (the Indian Premier League) was created shortly after. When traditional Indian names were used to replace those linked to the British Raj in the 1990s, several team names and spellings were changed. In particular, Bombay became Mumbai and Calcutta’s location became Kolkata. These two locations served as the principal hubs for all British commerce.

India’s batting lineup became more attack-oriented throughout the 1980s, with skilled batters like Mohammad Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Ravi Shastri becoming prominent in this period. India won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, however, despite that success, the squad struggled in the Test arena, going 28 games without a win. Nonetheless, India won both the World Cricket Championship in Australia in 1985 and the Asia Cup in 1984. India hosted the 1987 Cricket World Cup.
