Cristiano Ronaldo has added yet another feather on his hat. This time, however, not for a record-breaking goal or a trophy lift, but for becoming the first active footballer to reach billionaire status, as confirmed by the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The 40-year-old Portuguese star, already regarded as one of the most accomplished athletes of all time, has seen his net worth soar to an estimated $1.4 billion. This is largely attributed to his lucrative contract extension with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, signed in June 2025. The deal, reportedly worth over $400 million, includes a significant salary increase, bonuses and a 15% ownership stake in the club.
The entry to the billion-dollar club
Ronaldo’s brilliance on the soon made him an international hero, being one of the most sought-after athletes in the advertisement sector. A decade-long Nike endorsement earns him approximately $18 million per year, while other brand deals with the likes of Armani and Castrol have added over $175 million to his fortune. His 660+ million Instagram followers- the largest of any individual on the platform- make him a marketer’s dream and a brand in himself.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Lottery
Ronaldo hit a jackpot after his switch over to to Al-Nassr in January 2023. With an annual tax-free salary of around $200 million, the footballer instantly became the highest-paid athlete in the world, as confirmed by Forbes in 2025.
The latest contract extension only catapult his financial status. Beyond the massive base salary, the addition of a 15% equity stake in Al-Nassr positions Ronaldo not just as a player, but as a stakeholder in the rapidly expanding Saudi Pro League.

Never-dying Passion for Football
Despite having the world at his feet, Ronaldo’s passion for the sport is unfazed. Speaking at the Portugal Football Globes gala, where he received the Prestige Award, he made it clear that retirement is not imminent.
“People, especially my family, say: ‘It’s time for you to stop. You’ve done everything. Why do you want to score a thousand goals?’ But I don’t think that way. I’m still producing good things, helping my club and my national team. I know I don’t have many more years, but the few I have left, I will enjoy to the fullest.”
Ronaldo currently stands at 141 goals in 223 international appearances, and with nearly 950 official goals across his career, he now eyes the mythical 1,000-goal milestone.
As he prepares for Portugal’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers- against Ireland on October 12 and Hungary on October 15- the world watches not just a football legend, but a global icon who continues to redefine what’s possible in sport.
